I think I’ve made it clear that Andy is the muscles in this relationship (I’m more the spreadsheet updater and meal creator). While I am working hard on the house, Andy is really working on the house. This has never been truer than this past weekend.
We decided to extend the hardwoods that are throughout the house into the kitchen. As you may remember, it had tile which Andy and Powerhouse Lane ripped up last week. The hardwoods guy came to give us a quote. He said we needed to rip up not just the linoleum (which we found under the tile, blerg) but also the plywood beneath that, and then replace it with new plywood. If you’re lost, that’s ok, I don’t really get it either. The point is, it was a lot of work.
We could have just paid the hardwoods guy $400 to do it for us. But Andy and his dad decided to save some money and tackle it on their own. From what I overheard from upstairs, it was a challenge. 11 hours and two trips to Lowes later, this is what we have!
Unfortunately I didn’t take pictures of the process because I was trying not to throw my putty knife at the wallpaper that was refusing to come up. But Andy and his dad did an awesome job. Now our hardwoods will have a nice, non-squeaky foundation.
Next week new hardwoods will be installed here and in the foyer, and we’ve decided to go ahead and refinish all the wood floors in the entire house to a darker color. It’s not that much money and we think it will be a big bang for our buck. Here are some of the finishes we’re thinking of!
